September 30, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
September 30th: UCCS, Centennial Hall
Lullabies & Sleepless Dreams: a duo concert with voice and flute
7:30pm, Centennial Hall Auditorium on the UCCS campus
will be joined by Bob Jurkscheit, percussion, Kelly Zuercher, piano, Sarah Wilson, cello, and Colin McAllister, guitar/banjo
Soprano Haleh Abghari and flutist Jane Rigler, along with guests, will present works by composers Henry Cowell, George Crumb, Brian Ferneyhough, Jane Rigler, Robert Beaser and others. These works traverse parts of the psyche that live in the realm of dreams and nightmares in various states of the subconscious and/or the conscious mind.
The intimate nature of lullabies promote comfort and security for both the singer and the listener. Often, the context of lullabies are nonsensical and may evoke the insecurities and fears of the singer. The nonlinearity of dreaming states can bring the dreamer to a revealing awareness of her/his anxieties, often promoting a healing process. The music on this program enlightens various facets of complex, dreamy relationships which, when discovered may actually be simple and transparent. This music exhibits the voice and the flute binding and separating. Air is the common factor. New languages are uttered.
