Encounters: Music from the Time of Renewal

OPEN SPACE MUSIC is delighted to announce a Summer Season performance at Woodstock’s Maverick Concert Hall on Friday August 19th from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. The evening’s program showcases the collaborations of composers with the poet Dorota Czerner.

“Story of the Face” is built around a spoken dramatic fragment about female identity, masks, image and self-image, with which composer Jon Forshee constructs a dynamic landscape from computer-generated sounds, the poet’s own voice (treated and untreated), and live performances of tuba, theremin, guitar, and piano. The piece is accompanied by filmed footage inspired by the text.

“Fireflies II” by pianist/composer Augustus Arnone is a mixed-media work for piano, electronics, and voice, which refers to the enigmatic phenomenon of self-synchronizing firefly species of the Southern Appalachians. Video artist Paloma Kop has created a unique abstract video projection specially for this performance.

The program opens and closes with two pieces by composer Benjamin Boretz – “O” (arranged for guitar by Mary Lee Roberts), performed by guitarist Colin McAllister; and “Passage (for Roger Sessions)” performed by pianist Augustus Arnone.

Compositions by Adam Greene and Christopher Bailey round out the evening.
In addition to the performers named above, we are pleased to welcome Joshua Charney (piano) as guest instrumentalist.

Maverick Concert Hall – set in the forest outside of Woodstock, NY – in the foothills of the Catskill mountains, is a historic and unique site in the music and art worlds, made famous as the venue of the first performance of John Cage’s renowned piece 4’33” which took place exactly seventy years ago, at the end of August 1952.

As dusk descends, we hope you will take advantage of the location’s silences and sounds, and experience the interplay of light, sound, voice, music, and the elements.
